‘Hello: Phone box Interventions’ is a series of interactive sound installations placed in derelict phone boxes in and around Belfast City Centre. The installation consists simply of a modified office phone placed in the phone box with instructions. This office phone uses a voice recording and playback module that allows the user to leave a ten second message which can be heard by the next user, however once a new message is recorded the last message is overwritten and deleted for ever. So far two iterations have ben placed in phone boxes in the Ormeau area and Royal Ave in city centre.
Both iterations were up for a week in each location, during that time I visited the phone box each day to hear the last message recorded, of course I missed out on many but from the ones I caught I heard messages of Joy, songs, declarations of love, well wishes and thoughts from a New Zealand tourist.
I developed the project expecting to hear rude messages but was blown away by the kindness and creativity of the people of Belfast.
